Three apps, one chemistry engine: the suite beta opens

The Expert Bioprocess Designer Suite opens to invited testers with three apps: buffer design, solution operations and bioreactor design. Here's what they do, and how far to trust them.

TL;DR — Three apps are open to invited testers. They share one engine, they run in the browser, and each one tells you where its model stops.

Until now, Expert Buffer Designer answered one question well: what goes into this buffer, and what pH will it have? Today it becomes part of something larger. The Expert Bioprocess Designer Suite is seven design apps built on one first-principles chemistry engine, and the first three are open to invited testers.

What’s in the beta

  • Expert Buffer Designer — rebuilt from the ground up. It tells you what to weigh out, the pH you’ll get, the pH your meter will read, and how that pH moves with temperature, salt and a 10% weighing error.
  • Expert Solution Operations Designer — follow one vessel through make, add, titrate and dilute steps, with the pH and composition after every one. Viral-inactivation holds, pool conditioning, titration planning.
  • Expert Bioreactor Designer — a CHO culture with its feeds and its DO and pH control, solved together, so you can see which limit binds first and when.

A buffer designed in one app opens in another with the same composition. That’s the point of one engine: the chemistry that has to agree between apps does.

How far to trust it

Every app has a section in its guide called something like How far to trust the numbers, and we mean it. The buffer models are checked against published pKa data and hold to a few hundredths of a pH unit at working ionic strength. The Solution Operations Designer’s whole workflows haven’t yet been compared with bench titrations. The Bioreactor Designer’s cells are plausible, not validated against your cell line. We’d rather you knew that before you ran anything. How we check the models →

What we’re asking

Use it on a real question from your own work, and tell us what’s wrong. Send feedback, in each app’s menu, opens an email with the app and version filled in. The beta is for research and education only, not for GMP or release decisions, and it’s free while it runs.

What’s next

Four more apps share the same engine and are on the way: UF/DF, Buffer Stock Blending, Chromatography and Process Designer. When the suite opens to everyone, each app will start with a free trial.
