Expert Solution Operations Designer

Plan what happens in a vessel, step by step: a three-minute tour of Expert Solution Operations Designer.

About this guide

Plan what happens in a vessel, step by step: make the solutions you need, add them, titrate, dilute, and see the pH and the composition at every point. This takes about three minutes. For how the numbers are calculated, and where they stop being reliable, see the detailed guide.

1. Open a design

The first page gives you four ways in:

  • Start with an example. The featured example, Viral inactivation: acidify → hold → neutralize, takes a mock Protein A pool down to the low-pH hold and back up. Click Open example.
  • App-defined designs are grouped by category (Buffers, Bioprocess and Learn) and by kind. Mini-apps are ready-made tools with a few inputs. Designs are full step lists you can edit.
  • User defined lists your saved work.
  • Build from scratch starts an empty design.

2. Mini-apps: change the inputs, read the result

A mini-app opens with Inputs on the left and the chart on the right. Change a value, such as the VI hold pH, and the Result (the final pH, what a pH meter should read, and the volume) and the chart update.

  • Edit steps & solutions opens the full design behind the mini-app.
  • Report makes a printable report.
  • Save keeps your inputs under a name of your choice.

3. Build a design: solutions, then operations

The builder has two lists.

  • Solutions are what you prepare. Add a Buffer (a buffer system at a concentration and pH), Compounds (your own list) or a Stock (one compound at a molarity). Library brings in a solution saved anywhere in the suite, such as a buffer from the Expert Buffer Designer. Defining a solution puts nothing in the vessel.
  • Operations are what happens in the vessel, in order: Add volume, Adjust pH (titrate to a target pH), Dilute, Dilute to ion conc, Target compound and Target ion.

Each step runs as soon as its fields are filled; an empty required field is outlined in red. Drag a card by its handle to reorder.

4. Read the chart

The chart has three panels, Ion, Compound and pH, plotted against the total volume in the vessel. Dashed lines mark the end of each step. Tick step numbers above the chart to zoom in on part of the run, and Clear selection shows it all again. Hover over a line to read its value.

5. Ask “what if?”

Sweep, beside Visualization, runs your design many ways. Pick a Step and a Parameter in it, give a range or a list of values, and click Run sweep. You get the pH curve of every run, one color each, and a table of the final pH and volume. A sweep changes nothing in your design.

6. Save and report

  • The builder saves as you work. The badge reads Saved. Save As keeps a copy under a new name.
  • Tick Share solutions to library to make this design’s solutions available in the other apps.
  • Report builds a document with the solutions to prepare, the procedure with the pH and volume after every step, the final mixture and the chart. Download PDF saves it.

Need more?

  • The Assistant, in the builder’s left column, can build a design from a plain-language request. Type /demo to watch it build and run a four-step acetate example, even without an AI model.
  • The detailed guide explains each operation, the chemistry behind the numbers, and the limits.

This is the quick guide from the app's own Help panel, as of 28 September 2026. Inside the app, the Help panel also holds the detailed guide: every screen, how each number is calculated, and where it stops being reliable.
